Yenchenyawen studio was founded by Yen Chen and Ya Wen in 2015.

Based in London and Taipei, the studio designs and makes handcrafted objects in which unorthodox material combinations are manipulated by traditional and experimental techniques.

The studio is aiming to create high quality artistic and design objects have evolved over time. Influenced by the philosophy and aesthetic of the concept Wabi-Sabi and explores the effects of time. The aesthetic is sometimes described as one of the beauty that is “imperfect impermanent, and incomplete“. To reveal this, we are implying not only the techniques and patters but also the organic shape of the object to form the unity of Wabi-Sabi

Our work is based on the process rather than the result. By combining casting material together with metal powders, we create a range of decorative pieces that change over the time. Depending on varying levels of humidity and chemical substances they gradually develop various colours and patterns forming patina. It reflects collective memory of the objects and the tasks it has performed. Due to this natural process, every item although cast in the same mould, is completely unique with landscape- like markings.

Yen Chen and Ya Wen both graduated from Royal College of Art in Design Product and Textile in 2014 and 2012. Yen Chen is interested in how material, craft and computing technology could come together to influence design and Ya Wen’s area of expertise is creating innovative rich combinations of various raw materials and colours.

Their works merge between craft and technology and focus on curating lifestyle and enrich aesthetics of life through their creation.
